Ben Mccashney Aussie Race Car Team, Clipsal 500 Adelaide, March 2007 - Exclusive photos

18 year old Trentham driver Ben McCashney traveled to Adelaide for the Clipsal 500, round 1 of the Australian Aussie racing car championship.

A massive 276,900 spectators attended the 4 day meeting. The Aussie racing car category boasted a huge 38 entries. The team was confident following a successful test at Winton and with the addition of Nick Randall to engineer the car.

Qualifying went well with Ben posting the 6th fastest time.

Race 1 saw Ben running comfortably in 3rd place until a safety car period. Cooling tyres and brakes cost one place and he finished a solid 4th.

Race 2 saw Ben pushing hard placing huge pressure on the race leader James Ward towards the race end. The car was showing fantastic race pace at the end of the race and despite the pace Ben was able to maintain his tyres in great condition.

Race 3 saw Ben start from 2nd place. He lost one place on the first lap while his tyres were coming up to temperature. He was looking to move forward when he received a drive through penalty for a jumped start! He resumed in 28th position and made a huge recovery to finish 19th including passing 5 cars on the last lap. Despite the team not being able to find any evidence that he had in fact jumped, there is no recourse available and the team were forced to accept the decision!

Starting 7th place in the final gave the team some confidence and Ben felt a podium finish was achievable. He slipped back one place on the first lap and then charged back to record the fastest lap on lap 3. A safety car period followed after Trevor Harding rolled spectacularly. After the restart Ben was crashed out when an overly ambitious passing move from another driver saw both cars in the wall! Ben managed to recover the situation and finish. This was certainly an unfitting end to a great effort. The Playstation/Steel Blue team is looking forward to the next round at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Ben would like to thank his sponsors Playstation, Steel Blue Industrial footwear, Mollison Motors, Vereker Bros Smash repairs, Rass Media, Simon Signs and Rick Egan for their support.
